While not as epic as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, playing Mario Kart Wii has been a very similar play experience in terms of fun. I still prefer Brawl with its Emissary and its local multiplayer capibilities. But where Brawl lacks, Mario Kart picks up.
The fourth out of five first-party series I want to see on Wii, (Mario, Kart, Smash, and Zelda, leaving only Star Fox) Mario Kart Wii is just great. The peripheral that comes with the game, the Wii Wheel, makes the game even funner, but a little more challenging. Brawl has a great multi player aspect to it, but don't expect me to play alone for hours on end after beating the SSE. That's what makes Mario Kart so great. The single player aspect is so fleshed out with the Grand Prix, Time Trials (and unlocking Pro Staff Times), and just for fun Versus and Battle modes. You'll probably play the Grand Prix repeatedly to achieve Three Star Ranks. And super-functional online play.
Better still, the new tracks are great and the Trick mechanic works very well with the game. Old tracks are almost all new to me, because I never played Super Mario Kart or Super Circuit. A few marks against the game though, rubber band AI is relentless in this game in 100cc and up. Rubber band AI is when the computer opponents get a significant and purposeful advantage over you in certain conditions. They fall behind, they catch up again. It sucks. And the Blue Shell remains and appears a lot more in larger engine classes. I hate the blue shell. It doesn't even assist the one who threw it. And the game still has blocky graphics, although you can't notice them as much as Double Dash.
I still love this game, but is it better than Mario Kart DS? No. MK DS Local multiplayer is the best on DS, and best local multiplayer on the Wii is Brawl of course. A five out of six.
