All I can really say about this movie is...it works. On SO many levels. The way they used the Handicam-style filming (Reminisant of the Blair Witch Project...which I never saw.) worked really well with the movie itself. The movie's monster was pretty scary, some sort of giant fish thing, and makes King Kong and Godzilla comparatively cute. The movie even leads in as a U.S. Government Video, addressing the case file as "Cloverfield" and revealling that the footage was on an SD card recovered from the area formerly known as "Central Park."
My only gripe with this movie was it's ending, leaving us off with a clip of a falling something in the distance of a view from Coney Island which is, in my opinion, the scariest part of the movie. (Think about it.)
But on top of that, the air of mystery surrounding the movie is intense. Where did the monster come from? Was it destroyed? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBHjgej9jp8 ,turn your speakers up.) What was the falling object? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XYERYYOyJQ , skip to 1:10)
Fortunately, for those truly interested, there are some websites that shed a little more light on the mysteries of Cloverfield, Google up Slusho and Tagruato.
Because of the thought-inducing plot, incredible action, and the depth of the viral advertising, this movie can only get a six out of six.
